Donation Campaign 2024

The inspiring story of Thomas

Each year, we gather testimonials from young people who have benefited from the Foundation’s awareness-raising initiatives. These wonderful stories are shared with our donors in our direct mail campaigns to highlight the impact of their precious support for the cause.

For this Spring 2024 edition, we met 21-year-old Thomas, who was keen to pass on a message of hope. It was through an organization funded by the Fondation Jeunes en Tête, through the Mayor’s Ball of Quebec City, that he was able to find the help and support he needed to get better. 🚩Trigger Warning: this text deals with sensitive subjects such as suicide and parental death.

“My name is Thomas, and I’m 21 years old. Two years ago, I took control of my mental health. Since then, I’ve realized that Fondation Jeunes en Tête plays an essential role in preventing psychological distress among young people like me through its various initiatives.

From the age of 2, I shuttled back and forth between 18 foster families and my biological parents, who were unable to care for me. During this convoluted journey, I went through difficulties and hardships that no young person should ever have to face: violence, abuse and the death of a parent.

When I was 18, I experienced a very painful breakup that was a turning point for me. It was one of the darkest moments of my life. On top of my generalized anxiety disorder, which I already knew I had, I was also diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, abandonment disorder and attachment disorder.

“I really wish that I had had access back then to resources like those offered by the Foundation.”

In 2022, after a suicide attempt, I realized that there was such a thing as mental health and I needed to take care of mine. I sought help from an organization funded by the Foundation. My efforts to rebuild my life were met with caring and respect. Since then, my life has turned around for the better.

I know first-hand that the Foundation provides critical help, answers, solutions and resources to Quebec teens. Talking about mental health when we’re young helps us to be better equipped for life’s challenges.   It means we can approach each day with hope.

I’m not sad because of what I’ve been through. I’m just different, and that’s what makes me the person I am today.

Thank you for your life-changing support.”
